Advantages of Using Coil Racks

What are the Advantages of Using Coil Racks?

Using professionally designed coil storage racks will allow you to customize them in accordance with your products. Let’s find out the benefits of using coil racks.

1. Overall Safety

Most coil racks have been designed to ensure maximum safety of equipment and personnel. These racks are integrated with features keeping in mind the problems associated with handling and transportation of industrial coils. In case you are worried about safety, you can consider working with a manufacturer who is certified by the right governing bodies.

When using steel coil racks the safety offered to the products as well as to the users is immense. These racks are equipped with several safety features. For example, a latch has been installed that keeps the products in place. The coils are held in place individually as well. When handling or transporting the coils, the users are safe. The wear and tear of the equipment used to handle these products is also minimal.

2. Safe Transportation

Racks that are designed specifically for coils will fit the products in perfectly. This means that the coils in the racks will not move. If the coils don’t move, they don’t collide with the walls or bars of the racks. Hence, they will not get damaged during transportation. The same is true when the rack is too small for the coil. Using the right coil racks will ensure that the coils will not have to be pushed into the rack. This will keep the coils from getting damaged during transportation or product handling.

When transporting industrial coils, safety is of the highest importance. The coils need to be securely placed within the racks in order to avoid any mishap during transportation. The placement of the coils will also ensure safety of the people and machines used to transfer the coils from the flatbed other automobile to the warehouse.

3. Increased Capacity

Coil racks are available in varying capacity ranges. When using a coil rack as opposed to other industrial racks, you will find that the coils fit in easily reducing human effort.

Custom designing and manufacturing of coil racks will help optimize logistics. Custom coil racks manufacturers in USA provide exceptional services that allow you to get the most out of your racking systems.

A coil rack that has been built to the exact specifications of your product will ensure that your products are not damaged during transit. These racks will also be built in accordance with the equipment that is used in conjunction with the racks.

For example, if you are using a 4-way fork to transport the coils from the racks to warehouse and back, then the coil racks can be built with a 4-way fork entry. This helps save time during normal operations, and chances of accidental damage to the rack or coil are minimal.

4. Optimal Flexibility

Since the rack has been designed to fit coils, the ergonomics ensure that more coils are fit easily in a smaller space. Steel coil racks offer maximum flexibility in terms of the product being transported and the many capabilities of the racks. Steel coil racks can be integrated with several features that are not possible when using wooden racks. If your product or needs are unique, you can consider getting customized coil racks. These racks will be designed in accordance with your product.

5. Long Service Life

Steel coil racks have a longer life. They last longer than wooden racks and function better. Steel will also not wear easily. They can take more abuse as compared to their wooden counterparts. When the best quality materials are sourced, the final product will last longer. Using such products ensures maximum reliability. This is extremely important since these coil racks are handling important products. Dependability of these products is extremely important.

Coil storage racks are used by most organizations for safe and efficient transportation of coils. The advantages of using these racks are limitless. They are used in several industries such as extrusion film manufacturing, steel coils, titanium coils, printed materials, paper laminated or film lamination’s. The benefits of surface protection and ease of handling apply to many industries.

Stress Testing System

We utilize every available process to produce the highest quality of products. From sourcing certified raw materials, to using analytical programs that help us determine the reliability of our products, performance is our priority.

Many companies use CAD software for the design of steel shipping racks. SPS Ideal Solutions, Inc. takes this to a new level by conducting stress design confirmation. The continual investment made in new SolidWorks CAD programs allows us to analyze the load capacity of stock as well as custom designed products.

Scope of SolidWorks

Stress testing on the SolidWorks program is used to assess every aspect of the design for vertical stress impact. This includes testing weldments, metal tubes, corners, joints, contact points, and beam lengths.

Stress Analysis Process with SolidWorks

The following is a brief run-through of the process followed by SPS Ideal Solutions to load test every rack manufactured:

  • The program allows selection of any point on the design. The product load on the supporting members and the framework can then be tested for stacking capacity.
  • Once the points on the design are selected, the program runs the “weighted

SolidWorks & Mixed Geometry

In this process, we compare the changes in metal deflection to the base strength of the metal being tested. All the known data regarding the load bearing capacities of various types of metal are stored in the SolidWorks system. The figures for different dimensions of metal structures are simultaneously calculated and inputted in the same system. For example, each tube of a specific material, size, and thickness requires a known amount of force to effect its collapse or bending. These figures are stored in the system allowing the software to recall or ‘remember’ the information depending on the material and dimensions of metal being tested.

Since a rack is a combination of a variety of solid, hollow, and sheet metal components like screws, beams, locks, etc., calculation of load capacity can be difficult. This mixed geometry comprises various materials, dimensions, and physical attributes. SolidWorks uses the information fed into the system to ascertain the load bearing capacity of the entire rack.

Beyond the Scope of Stress Analysis

SolidWorks is used throughout the design and manufacturing phases. In order to ensure excellent product development, we utilize this program to aid us in manufacturing parts without any defects. This machine also nullifies human error by guiding our manufacturing process to produce identical parts. SolidWorks moves beyond the scope of stress analysis and into manufacturing and product development.

8-Stage Customization Process

The customization process unfolds in the following manner:

  1. Inquiry – The first step to any order placement is client interest. The customization process begins with an inquiry from a client.
  2. Knowledge Transfer – This is an in-depth process wherein we get a complete idea of the client, product, and their expectations. Here, all the technical product-related information as well as the aesthetic design-related information is discussed. This is a two-way process – the client provides us with the details of the operation, product specifications, and more. The value addition on our end is presented in the form of better solutions. We first look at their current requirements or predicaments. Based on our experience and knowledge, we then provide reliable solutions. For the common goal of manufacturing best-in-class products. Below are some of the factors taken into consideration to define the technical specifications of the product:
    • Products to be stored in the rack
    • Entry for fork truck or hand truck
    • Loading and unloading procedures
    • Shipping distance and manner of shipping
    • Number of products to be stacked
    • Will the rack be stored in warehouse racks?

These are some of the basic points that will help us gain maximum clarity regarding the project. The structural design of the product is decided in accordance with these requirements.
  3. Detailed Information – For product designing and manufacturing, we use the cutting edge software, SolidWorks. CAD images are needed to support the several processes used to design a product. The drawings allow us to build around the image, capturing the contact support locations and keeping clear of other parts. Hence, for component parts, we expect our clients to provide us with CAD images.
  4. First Draft – Based on the knowledge transfer, we tailor a design for the client. The proposed product seeks to solve to all the problems faced by the client.
  5. First Review – The first product drawing is reviewed with the client. During the review, we identify changes or improvements to be made.
  6. Second Draft – According to the first review, adjustment, if any, are made to the design drawing. The second draft is perfected in accordance with these changes.
  7. Second Review – The second draft will be reviewed with the client. This process is repeated until the client is satisfied. Generally, one or two reviews are sufficient to finalize the design.
  8. Implementation of Design – Once the design has been finalized, we manufacture the actual product.

The tracking number provides us a known mill for the metal used on each project should a concern with quality develop at any point.

State-of-the-art Technology

We use best-in-class technology and equipment to manufacture products that are superior in design and function. Below are examples of some of the equipment used by us.

  • Amada Lasers – Amada lasers are used industry-wide to provide superior cuts. We utilize five Amada Lasers that make clean cuts with minimal sharp edges. They can be used to cut through a wide variety of materials at speeds as high as 80m/min. The Amada Laser works within tolerance limits of .004″. Thus, it is able to cut products with no margin of error. Program and part detail for repeatability is a main benefit.
  • Amada Laser Comparator – Each component is evaluated by the Amada Laser comparator for accurate dimensions. Absolutely every measurable feature on each component like the angle of bend, hole size, etc. is checked thoroughly and rigorously. This process demands perfection from every cut, hole, and bend. We are able to achieve high levels of quality of components and manufactured products with this process.
  • Cleaning & Powder Coating Technology – The effect of powder coating is greatly dependent on the cleanliness and finish of the surface. We have recently installed a cleaning line that scrubs all surfaces of any residual mill oils. This helps in providing long-lasting superior results with powder coating.

Automated Control Solutions: Barcode Tracking System for Reusable Steel Bins

This has led to companies facing losses, and resultant low ROIs (Return on Investment). Hence, there is a need for redefining the practices followed in inventory management, and supply chain management.

Understanding the Problem & Solution

Problem: Late or non-return of reusable shipping bins resulting in severe losses.

Solution: Integration of barcode tracking systems when using / shipping reusable steel bins.

What is a Barcode Tracking System?

Tracking labels are applied on to placard label holders. Label holders are holding surfaces installed on reusable bins. The material of the label holder is such that allows easy application and removal of labels, doesn’t get sticky, and does’t allow the label to easily fall off. The holder is also rugged enough to withstand regular wash downs, exposure to sunlight, and abrasive chemicals.

Barcode Tracking Process for Tracking of Reusable Steel Bins

Understanding the process of automated barcode tracking of reusable steel bins can help you understand how to integrate the same in your shipping company:

  1. A placard label holder is installed on each rack/ reusable bin
  2. Tracking labels with unique tracking codes are scanned and applied on to the placard label holder
  3. The tracking number is mentioned on the invoice sent to the client
  4. The tracking number is used to track down the bins or racks
  5. The tracking number is also used to understand patterns in terms of damage caused to the products

This process ensures that there is no scope for bins or racks going missing

Advantages of Barcode Tracking of Reusable Steel Bins

Integration of reusable packaging tracking technology provides the following benefits:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Reusable
  • Effective
  • Cheaper option compared to RFID label tracking system

Integration of barcode tracking systems to track reusable shipping bins has proved to be an ingenious idea. SPS Ideal Solutions recognized the positive impact of this system at an early stage. Today, we provide barcode tracking systems as a part of our shipping processes. The brilliance lies in the simplicity of the solution. An efficient, cost-effective, and durable option, barcode tracking systems ensure that your reusable containers are never lost. HVAC for Passenger Rail Cars

The underside of the HVAC is not – it houses controls, valves, sensors, circuit boards along with intake and outflow connective duct work. The HVAC is made of many different types of metals that would be damaged if not properly protected with a multi-metal VCI material.

To make this a more interesting challenge the clients – customer will store the rack with the HVAC outside in the train building yard because of space constraints. The rack and HVAC could sit outside for upwards of 12 months in the Northeast weather. With summer heat and winter freezing cycles, each season will create condensation on and in the HVAC. Condensation will create rust and rust is unacceptable. The material and design is proven successful since 2008. Water may collect and it will exit via the net underbelly of the package.

The tan film is Cortec MilCorr developed for extreme weather, loaded with Cortec VpCI (vapor phase corrosion inhibitors). VpCI molecules are attracted to all of the different metal surfaces. These molecules attach to the metal and repel condensation and oxygen from the surfaces. We used a combination of VpCI materials to create an envelope of protection that is safe for everyone. When the customer is ready to install the HVAC they simply remove the packaging cover, lift the HVAC from the rack. We use foam blocks with VpCI film covers to block the numerous openings on the HVAC. The systems we designed are fast and easy to install. Everything is easily recyclable.

Is your company manufacturing items that are prone to rust, but are stored for long or short periods of time? Warranty claims from items delivered with rust damage will occur if products are not properly protected. We have dry packaging solutions that are laboratory tested, field proven to be effective and priced to be cost effective. Our choice of materials and the design are based on the individual applications needs and the expectations of storage, time, conditions and handling.

Improved Space Usage For Trailer Loading

Our Locking Collar Hinge has once again come to the rescue of a Fortune 500 client in the heating and air conditioning OEM industry. With manufacturing in several countries our client was faced with transporting their cooling panels to another plant for assembly with other components. Your company may have this same problem.

The design needed to be collapsible. The compact design of our Locking Collar Hinge allows the collapsed steel rack to stack flatter. The flatter the rack the more we can stack for return when empty. Utilization of trailer space is Critical to proper cost efficiency in closed loop manufacturing processes that wisely use Sustainable steel racks from SPS Ideal Solutions. Our SOLID WORKS CAD program had already shown us the comparative overlay image of the shorter sizes of the panels. We mounted a second set of Locking Collar Hinge at the appropriate height; SOLID WORKS readily validated the height. Now the ends of the steel rack could be reverse folded to shorten the rack height. One Rack with adjustment for load heights!

We gained a huge benefit for our client by being able to load the taller racks in the trailer and then stack the shorter height panels with the steel racks ends folded down on top of the first. No Dead Space every useable inch of height is used. Improving the load efficiency of transporting panels between the plants allowed the client to meet their cost goal but also the manufacturing rates for final assembly were attained as well.

Does your company ship products with this height configuration dilemma that causes you to have “DEAD AIR”

Safe Trailer Transport

  • To our knowledge – our rack is the ONLY steel shipping rack designed to meet the US Safety requirement for safe transport of these larger size rolls.
  • The US requirement is concerned with preventing the roll from leaving the steel shipping rack and damage to the steel shipping rack, must not occur. We exceed both of these testing points.
  • The testing consists of highway speed testing, with an emergency stop within 250′. The roll cannot transition out of the cradles; the ends of the steel rack cannot deflect.
  • We meet these requirements with our design. Our client has hundreds in their system with no occurrence of damage to rolls or racks.
  • The ROI on this project was easily covered in 6 months use.

We have solutions already completed for hundreds of material handling applications, from rolled materials like this to rigid component parts. We may have just the one you need, if not we will design and supply the perfect system to meet your unique application.
